White-tailed deer have proliferated in the Finger Lakes region, and overgrazing threatens many native plants. But can some plants evolve to tolerate heavy browse? Laura asks whether some populations of jewelweed, an annual wetland herb, already have. More broadly, Laura asks whether invasive species -- whether native (like deer) or introduced (like honeysuckle) -- always have negative ecological consequences

Sugar Maple Mysteries

Brian has been researching sugar maples and maple syrup production for many years. In this talk he will review some interesting facts about the biology of Acer saccharum and its use as a source of sugar. He also will consider what is known about the future of this major tree species as the climate changes.

The Nature of Letchworth

It is famous for its rich history, scenic waterfalls, cliffs, forests and 66 miles of hiking trails. Doug Bassett has been the naturalist at Letchworth State Park for thirty years and knows the park intimately. He will explore with us the many wonders of nature and plant life in the park.
