Pesticides, pathogens, and pollinator-friendly plantings: What YOU can do to "save the bees"

Tuesday, October 20, 2020 - 7:00pm to Wednesday, October 21, 2020 - 6:45pm

In recent years, "pollinator declines" have occurred in the form of range contractions and population declines of wild pollinators, or unsustainable losses of managed honey bee colonies. Multiple threats to pollinator health exist, including loss habitat, insufficient floral resources, exposure to pesticides, emerging infectious diseases, climate change, and inadequate management practices among beekeepers. Because there are multiple threats to pollinator health, there must also be multiple solutions if the goal is to improve pollinator health.

Discomycetes are a subset of the Ascomycetes that encompass all fungi with cup-shaped fruiting bodies that produce asci and ascospores.  This general introduction will detail their unique morphological characters, taxonomic position, and examples of molecular and morphological research.  Their miniature shapes, colors, textures, and ornamentation make them beautiful flowers for the elves of the forest.

The photo is of Dudley’s Scarlet Cup (Sarcoscypha dudleyi), a large, common, spring-fruiting discomycete of the Finger Lakes Region (Six Mile Creek, 13 April 1974).
