Building a Movement to ReNaturalize the Skaneateles Lake Watershed with Native Perennial Plants
Mary and Janice will share why and how they launched their mission driven business to cultivate and expand the supply and use of native perennial landscaping plants to support buffering Skaneateles Lake from harmful pollutants. This brief introduction will be followed by an interactive discussion on how to build a Native Perennial Plant Revolution, it's components and indicators of success. They welcome all of your ideas!
Pesticides, pathogens, and pollinator-friendly plantings: What YOU can do to "save the bees"
In recent years, "pollinator declines" have occurred in the form of range contractions and population declines of wild pollinators, or unsustainable losses of managed honey bee colonies. Multiple threats to pollinator health exist, including loss habitat, insufficient floral resources, exposure to pesticides, emerging infectious diseases, climate change, and inadequate management practices among beekeepers. Because there are multiple threats to pollinator health, there must also be multiple solutions if the goal is to improve pollinator health.
Cup Fungi - The Elves’ Friends of the Forest
Discomycetes are a subset of the Ascomycetes that encompass all fungi with cup-shaped fruiting bodies that produce asci and ascospores. This general introduction will detail their unique morphological characters, taxonomic position, and examples of molecular and morphological research. Their miniature shapes, colors, textures, and ornamentation make them beautiful flowers for the elves of the forest.

Creating a Native Bog (Garden)
In this talk, Michael Hough will describe how to build something similar to a rain garden but with an impervious liner and appropriate substrates for growing bog and fen plants. He will include step by step photos of the build and also show how it has evolved overthe years to something that requires very little maintenance.

Growing a Plant Materials Program: Providing Specialized Plant Materials for Restoration in New York State Parks
The Plant Materials Program provides native, regionally appropriate seed and plants for environmental stewardship projects in New York State Parks. The program works directly with Parks land managers- often on projects that require re-planting after invasive species removal. The program fulfills a need for specialized plant materials, with a focus on species diversity and localized genetics. This presentation will highlight best practices used for sustainable plant materials collection, logistics of program operation, and restoration project highlights.
