Bog Walk
This TNC preserve (aka Malloryville Bog) has long been a favorite of local botanists and geologists. We’ll look for Rhododendron prinophyllum (early azalea) in flower and may also find pitcher plant, black chokeberry, and blueberries flowering in the bog. An easy walk on trails and boardwalk.Meet at CCE at 9:15 to car pool.
Spring Wildflowers
A walk along the Bear Trail in spring is sure to please. This rich site is home to many species of spring wildflowers and Susanne knows it well. Early Spring Walk
Join David for a walk in this beautiful state forest. The usual woodland ephemerals (e.g., hepatica, spring beauty, trout lily) should be evident and perhaps David will uncover some surprises! This will be a moderate walk on forest trails. Meet at CCE at 9:15 to carpool.
Winter Tree Walk
Join Akiva for a walk in the woods as we hike through the spectacular Danby State Forest. We will be working on winter ID of trees and shrubs by looking at bark, buds, and form. Akiva will also be talking about survival uses of trees and shrubs as well as their natural history. The state forest is home to a wide diversity of trees as well as a massive and surreal wetland. Meet at CCE at 10 am to carpool, or at the site: Take 96b south to Danby, turn right on Michigan Hollow Road (which is soon after Bald Hill Road). Follow Michigan Hollow for approximately 3 miles.
Suburban Moss Walk
I'll lead a suburban moss walk from Ithaca Falls to Carl Sagan's grave site. Along the way, we will see the only Katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) tree growing wild in Ithaca; and we hope to see billions and billions of bryophytes. If you have a hand lens, please bring it.
FLNPS Annual Seed Collection Outing
Learn how to collect seeds of late-flowering native plants while gathering seeds for Plantations and the FLNPS seed exchange. Collecting equipment will be provided. Tree ID and Inventory at Six Mile Creek
Learn how to identify trees using bark and bud characters and participate in an effort to document the tree species in the Six Mile Creek Natural Area. Meet in the Mulholland Wildflower Preserve parking lot just off Giles St. at 9 am. RAINDATE Oct 13. Contact Anna (379-0924) for more information.
Roy H. Park Preserve - South
Meet at 10:00 am at the Preserve's South parking area (not the new North lot near the boardwalk) on Irish Settlement Road, south of Goodband Rd. We will focus on plant identification, especially fall wildflowers, including asters and goldenrods. The trip ends at noon. Co-sponsored by the Finger Lakes Land Trust.
Roy H. Park Preserve - North
Meet at 9:00 a.m. at Cornell Cooperative Extension (615 Willow Ave Ithaca) to carpool, or at the Preserve’s new North parking lot on Irish Settlement Road at 9:30 a.m. (there are signs on the roadside). This diverse, scenic, and inviting 217-acre preserve is a short drive from Ithaca (near Dryden), and features the rugged headwaters of Six-Mile Creek, rolling meadows, open wetlands, mixed hardwood forest, wet hemlock woods with sphagnum moss and liverworts, numerous vernal pools, a large beaver pond fringed with cattails, and a Great Blue Heron rookery.
Ferns at Upper Treman State Park
See Dryopteris, Dennstaedtia, Cystopteris and many more at the height of the season at this fern-rich site. The walk will be of moderate difficulty, on a well-maintained trail and will require climbing a long staircase, but we will move at a botanizing pace. Meet at CCE at 1 pm to carpool, or meet at the site (parking lot by the old mill inside the Upper entrance). A parking fee will be required at the park.
