Smith Woods Old Growth Forest
Join Arieh Tal for a spring walk through a notable stand of local old growth forest, containing some trees as tall as 150 feet. Smith Woods has long been considered as a special natural area by Trumansburg residents, but it is less well known by those living farther away. Documentation of the plant species of Smith Woods, in the form of voucher specimens, is relatively scant. So, for many of us, this will be a walk of discovery.
Conifers - Meet the Coneheads
Winter is a great time to explore evergreens, and Cornell Botanic Gardens has a nice collection in a fairly small area. This walk will focus on identifying the conifers you might run across in the region's natural areas, both native and naturalized. Parking is available at the Welcome Center, so please come directly there.

Seed Walk - register please (rain date 10/15)
The annual seed walk is dependent on weather and seed availability, so the date may shift. We collect seeds for the FLNPS December seed exchange and plant sale, and for Cornell Botanic Gardens Wildflower Garden. Participants are welcome to take some for their own use. This year we will be collecting, with permission, in Cornell Botanic Garden's Ringwood Preserve. Please contact info@flnps.org to get on the list for changes in plans.

Goldenrod ID - Field Workshop - 2nd chance
This is a repeat of the workshop offered onAugust 26th, which was oversubscribed. The goldenrod species of New York comprise a sizeable proportion of the late-summer and fall herbaceous flora of the state. All are native; many are showy. Though some species are common, and considered "weeds", a few are quite rare. While a few goldenrod species can be difficult to distinguish, most are fairly easy to recognize. On this field workshop we will identify 12 of the 17 species known to occur in Tompkins County.
